My friends and I went to our first ever Pow-wow last Sunday. This was hosted by the Barona reservation. It was a feast for the eyes and ears. Held over the course of three days, and lasting well into the night, many tribes competed for prizes and cash. We saw the youth compete in several dances.
Different tribes take share of the drumming responsibilities, and the beat of the drum reflects the moves of the dancers.
The oldest member led the youth out for introduction, and many children and young adults came forth in colorful ensembles.
There is another pow wow held at the Sycuan reservation next weekend-September 9,10,11. If you live in or around San Diego, it is well worth the trip.
