Costume painting class-Final edwardian dress restoration project

The dress for the first pose of the costume class is now finished (with a bit of loose ends to tidy up.) Briana, our model fit the dress and period quite well!

I made a necklace and earrings to match.

Saturday was the first day of class and the demo day. I will post the demo painting when I get a chance.

costume class-edwardian dress restoration project

The appliques on the back are now sewn down.
I dyed the silk using the Garnet Putnam dye, and it is now a shade darker. Another shade darker would have been nice, but this will have to do:

This antique lace skirt may become part of the skirt ensemble, with the dark red silk under and the lighter red crepe silk on the outside:

One side of the bodice is nearly done, and the beaded portions on the other side are now secured

Two days to finish!

Part 2-costume class-edwardian dress restoration project

Slow going on the restoration project! One sleeve is finished, the other is nearly done. I slipped the silk over a cardboard tube, which made it easier to handle the limp fabric.

I am treating the beaded areas as an applique, cutting them away from the bad silk and laying them on top of the new.
The complex beading of the bodice is too time consuming to re-string. Each bead was originally secured to fine silk tulle and then to the bodice.

Most of the silk tulle has dissolved over time. New silk is added to the backside and random areas are re-secured.

The red flowers on the back of the bodice are also being treated as an applique. They are cut from the old silk and laid over the new-

There are two more of these to add to the back:

The missing silk is requiring some research and detective work. I have to base the setting of the sleeves on conjecture, as they had fallen off the bodice area. Many of the old dresses had dolmen type sleeves, creating that Japonesque look so popular during the time.
